Seen from a distance, Niedergesteln nestles at the foot of an impressive gash in the mountainside, a narrow canyon carved out by the Jolibach. From the village, only a short dead-end path leads into the gorge, following the course of the stream. Nothing out of the ordinary, however, apart from a somewhat oppressive atmosphere between the cliffs.
