Matala
Matala BayTucked away at the very back of its well-sheltered bay, Matala was, at the dawn of Antiquity, one of the two ports of Phaistos, a Minoan city whose archaeological site lies some ten kilometres away. We are here at the southernmost tip of the bay, facing the cliff where the famous caves open out – caves once home to hippies who had fallen under the spell of what was then just a tiny fishing village.
