Argyroupoli
Above the village of Argyroupoli (the ancient Lappa), numerous springs have created a wild and somewhat mysterious oasis, where there are plenty of tavernas to enjoy a meal or a drink in lush, green surroundings offering a welcome coolness.

Situated 23 km south-west of Rethymnon, this exceptional site has, of course, ceased to be a well-kept secret. It attracts many visitors, and it’s best to visit in the morning, before the tourists arrive. There’s no need to bring a hat or water – there’s plenty of shade and tavernas!

These numerous streams and waterfalls form the headwaters of the River Mouselas, one of the most important rivers in western Crete, which, unlike many other Cretan rivers, flows practically all year round. There were once as many as 11 mills used for grinding grain along the Mouselas, and the ruins of some of them can still be seen today.

As you wander around the site, your eye may be drawn to the unassuming chapel of Agia Dynami, which is almost invisible high above an esplanade. Carved into the rock, it is tiny and has an underground river running through it, the waters of which are said to be miraculous, according to local legends.

Even if you don’t believe in legends, the springs of Argyroupoli are a must-see on any trip to Crete, and you won’t forget them in a hurry!
